Queensland E-Scooter Rules: Check Before You Ride
Queensland rules have changed. Since 31 August 2026, e-scooter riders must generally be at least 16 and hold a valid driver licence (minimum Learner). Equivalent interstate and overseas licences are recognised. Do not ride with an expired or suspended licence, or while disqualified. Registration and insurance are not currently required for a compliant e-scooter.
For public use, an e-scooter must be designed for one person, be no more than 750 mm wide and 1,350 mm high, weigh no more than 60 kg, and not exceed a motor-propelled speed of 25 km/h. Devices made after 1 July 2026 must be limited to 25 km/h; faster devices bought earlier must be limited by 28 February 2027.
Wear an approved bicycle or motorbike helmet, keep left and give way to pedestrians. The maximum speed on footpaths is 12 km/h; slow to 12 km/h when passing pedestrians on shared paths. E-scooters can use roads and on-road bike lanes with speed limits of 60 km/h or less.
